This International Standard defines the Common LanguageInfrastructure (CLI) in which applications written in multiplehigh-level languages can be executed in different systemenvironments without the need to rewrite those applications to takeinto consideration the unique characteristics of thoseenvironments. This International Standard consists of the followingparts:

• Partition I: Concepts and Architecture – Describes the overallarchitecture of the CLI, and provides the normative description ofthe Common Type System (CTS), the Virtual Execution System (VES),and the Common Language Specification (CLS). It also provides aninformative description of the metadata.

• Partition II: Metadata Definition and Semantics – Provides thenormative description of the metadata: its physical layout (as afile format), its logical contents (as a set of tables and theirrelationships), and its semantics (as seen from a hypotheticalassembler, ilasm).

•  Partition III: CIL Instruction Set – Describes theCommon Intermediate Language (CIL) instruction set.

•  Partition IV: Profiles and Libraries – Provides anoverview of the CLI Libraries, and a specification of theirfactoring into Profiles and Libraries. A companion file,CLILibrary.xml, considered to be part of this Partition, butdistributed in XML format, provides details of each class, valuetype, and interface in the CLI Libraries.

• Partition V: Debug Interchange Format – Describes a standardway to interchange debugging information between CLI producers andconsumers.

• Partition VI: Annexes – Contains some sample programs writtenin CIL Assembly Language (ILAsm), information about a particularimplementation of an assembler, a machine-readable description ofthe CIL instruction set which can be used to derive parts of thegrammar used by this assembler as well as other tools thatmanipulate CIL, a set of guidelines used in the design of thelibraries of Partition IV, and portability considerations.
